4th September 2006

Breast surgery specialist Professor Oleg Eremin is to be honoured for his contribution to medicine by the University of Lincoln.

Professor Eremin is Director of Research and Development and Consultant Surgeon at the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust and a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Health, Life and Social Sciences at the university.

Born in Shanghai in 1938 to Russian parents, he survived the Japanese occupation of the city but left to escape the arrival of Mao Tse Tung and the Chinese Communists in 1950.

He and his parents were evacuated to the Philippines and emigrated to Australia in 1951, where Professor Eremin trained as a doctor and met his wife, Jenny, a fellow medical student.

They moved to the UK with their daughter Katherine in 1972 and Professor Eremin remained in the country to pursue his career in medicine.

He has held a number of clinical posts, including Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Aberdeen. He has been Professor of Surgery at Queen’s Medical Centre, University of Nottingham, since 1998 and consultant breast surgeon and lead clinician (since 1999) and Director of Research and Development (since 2001) at the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust.

Professor Eremin is also an honorary Professorial Fellow at the Rowett Research Institute. He specialises in breast cancer, tumour immunology, nutrients, psychosocial oncology and PET imaging.

Although a strongly committed surgeon with excellent technical skills, Professor Eremin recognises the limitations of the scalpel in treating some diseases and has had a lifelong interest in harnessing the body’s own physical and psychological defences against cancer.

Professor Eremin will receive his honorary Doctorate of Science during an undergraduate awards ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral at 11.30am on Wednesday 13th September.
