A media graduate who is collecting his University of Lincoln degree in Hull this week has had a successful year.

As well as completing his degree Martin Millson also won a BBC competition to discover new talent.

Martin Millson, who will graduate on Wednesday 6th September with a degree in Media Technology, won the BBC’s Raw Talent music video competition in the spring.

His video featuring Hull band The Bonnitts formed part of Martin’s final year showcase project for his degree.

Martin filmed the video using blue screen technology to create a scenario in which the band members were actually much smaller than reality and interacted with life-sized objects found in a typical bar room atmosphere.

“As the band is up-and-coming and growing in popularity I decided to use the notion of them getting bigger as the basis for the video,” says Martin.

“So I ran off with a decent digital SLR on a cold wet day in Hull and went to visit four of Hull's biggest and stereotypical landmarks: the KC Stadium, The Deep, the old court building and the Humber Bridge.

“In order for me to reflect the band’s growth within the music scene, I decided to have them all literally grow. Rather than just having them slightly larger on the bar however, I thought it would have more impact to show them rising over the top of these landmarks.”

Martin says he was amazed when he found out he’d won. “When I received a phone call from the BBC telling me that I'd won the competition, I was ecstatic and very excited. This level of recognition will hopefully encourage more unsigned bands to jump on the music video band wagon.”

Martin will graduate at 2.30pm on Wednesday 6th September in the Kingston Suite at the KC Stadium.
