POSTGRADUATE AWARDS AT CATHEDRAL

Around 160 students will celebrate their achievements at Lincoln Cathedral next Wednesday at the University of Lincolnís postgraduate awards ceremony.

At the same time honorary doctorates will be awarded to Professor Sarah Skelton and Tony Worth in recognition of their services to the county.

Professor Sarah Skelton trained as a midwife at the Royal College of Midwives and the University of Surrey and then taught midwifery in Portsmouth, where she studied the causes of stillbirth.

She became particularly aware of the needs of parents following the birth of a stillborn or severely ill child, and when she returned to Lincoln to teach midwifery in 1980 she opened the first family room in a maternity hospital.

She was Director of Nursing at Lincoln County Hospital for 16 years from 1984. In 2000 she was appointed as Director of Nursing for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust, incorporating Lincoln, Boston, Grantham and Louth hospitals.

Tony Worth attended Iowa State University and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he gained a degree in Natural Sciences.

He married in 1964 and moved to Australia, working as an agricultural consultant in the Western District of Victoria. Three and a half years later he returned to Lincolnshire and settled on the family farm.

In addition to running the farm, Tony is actively involved in marketing co-operatives, one of which has evolved into a private company, now owned by the Worth family, which supplies potatoes to three major supermarket groups.

He was High Sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1990, Deputy Lieutenant in 1994 and currently Vice Lord-Lieutenant. He joined the board of governors of the University of Lincoln in 1995 and for the last four years of his term of office was Chairman of the Finance Committee.

The awards ceremony will take place at Lincoln Cathedral at 11.30am on Wednesday 26th January 2005.
