UNIVERSITY BOXING CHAMP PSYCHES UP FOR NEXT FIGHT

A University of Lincoln Psychology student who won a gold medal in a major student boxing event last month is aiming to top his recent boxing successes in his next match.

Danny Slaney (19) from Harworth in Doncaster was short-listed by BUSA to represent the UK in the European student games next year after his win in the British Universities Sports Association’s (BUSA) Boxing Championships held in Dundee.

Danny will fight the current Yorkshire Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) champion Ben Atkin from the St Vincent’s Boxing Club in Sheffield at 10pm on Monday 17th January, at the Conisbrough Boxing Club show in Mexborough.

Danny has been a keen boxer for around 13 years and has boxed competitively for nine years, winning the Yorkshire and Humberside championships and competing in all of the home nations and in Cyprus.

"This will be a good test for Danny as Ben is really on form", said ABA advanced boxing coach Mick Joyce.

The university’s AU and Societies President Phil Bell is also convinced about Danny’s potential in the upcoming fight.

“Danny’s successes not only help to promote the university’s Athletic Union, but also form a springboard for the establishment of our own boxing society at the university,” he said.

“We are obviously very pleased with his past achievements and wish him the very best of luck for any future competitions.”

Danny’s coaches will meet with university representatives on Friday 28th January to discuss future prospects of taking advantage of the current boxing gym, and hope to establish a boxing club at the university later in the year.
