ACADEMIC HELPS CREATE NEW CARTOON CHARACTER

A languages lecturer from the University of Lincoln and a satirical national newspaper cartoonist have collaborated on a new cartoon character.

Andy Daglish is the university’s English languages co-ordinator, whilst Tim Sanders is a renowned freelance cartoonist who has his work printed regularly in a host of national newspapers including the Guardian, the Observer and the Independent.

The unlikely pair, who have been close friends for many years, came up with the idea for the character of ‘Ed Further’, a satirical cartoon lecturer.

The first cartoon was published in ‘The Lecturer’, the journal of NATFHE, the university and college lecturers’ union, in the summer.

The next image is due to be published in the next edition of the monthly journal, which is released 11 times a year.

“Though it’s by no means a strictly set role, for the most part I come up with the themes and then Tim draws them up as cartoons,” said Andy.

“It’s not unusual for him to call me up on deadline because he’s struggling with a comical idea, particularly if there’s not much happening in the news.”
