Award-winning journalist John Pilger will be in Lincoln next month to lend his support to the launch of the Lincoln School of Journalism.

Mr Pilger will be joined by John Bird, founder of the ‘Big Issue’, and Dorothy Byrne, Head of News and Current Affairs at Channel 4, at the official launch of the school on Monday 1st November.

A series of events from 1st to 4th November will follow the launch, including a question-and-answer session with John Pilger, Professor Tulloch’s inaugural lecture in defence of popular journalism, a round-table discussion with local and national journalists and a celebration event for journalism alumni.

The school is a development of the Department of Journalism which was set up at the University of Lincoln in 1998.

The Lincoln School of Journalism will offer undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and professional short courses and will also undertake research.

It is being headed up by Professor John Tulloch, former Chair of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Westminster.

“We aim to put the Lincoln School of Journalism on the map as a national and international centre of excellence, fully accredited by the industry and offering professionally relevant programmes in journalism,” said Professor Tulloch.

“I’m hugely impressed by the new facilities which the university has put at the disposal of the school – they are as good as, if not better than, anything I have seen in a UK university.”

The official opening of the Lincoln School of Journalism will take place in the Media, Humanities and Applied Computing Building (MHAC) at Brayford Pool at 4.30pm on Monday 1st November.

John Pilger, who has twice won the Journalist of the Year award, will unveil a plaque marking the occasion.
