SONY RADIO AWARD FOR LINCOLN GRADUATE

University of Lincoln graduate Simon Green is celebrating today after the show he produces for Viking FM picked up a silver Sony Radio Academy Award.

‘Sam Heywood In The Afternoon’ came second in the daily music show category, beating Radio 1’s Chris Moyles into third place.

The judges described the content of the show as “spot-on in targeting its audience - it's bright and fresh, well presented with good music."

Simon studied Communications at the University of Lincoln in Hull and graduated in 1998. He was Vice President of the Students’ Union between 1998-99.

He joined Viking FM in 2002 and only launched ‘Sam Heywood in the Afternoon’ 18 months ago.

“I’m absolutely elated,” he said after the Sony Radio Academy Awards in London last night (Wednesday). “It’s a lot more than we expected – in fact I’m pretty sure that they’ve got it wrong!”

Simon and his colleagues rubbed shoulders with stars including Elton John, Dannii Minogue and Martin Kemp at the awards ceremony, which is considered to be the radio industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The winner of the daily music show category was ‘Lunchtime with Ace and Invisible’ produced by 1Xtra for the BBC.

University of Lincoln graduates Tom Rhys and John Fox (‘Foxy and Tom’), who cut their teeth on the university radio station SIREN FM before joining Viking FM, were nominated in the breakfast show category but came home without an award.
