Product Design students at the University of Lincoln have been visiting design consultancies in New York to get an insight into the industry.
Students visited the leading design consultancies Ecco and Smart, where staff gave presentations on the design processes within their organisations.
This latest trip to the Big Apple followed previous visits by students in 1997 and 2001.
“We aim to ensure that there is direct liaison between the course and the design industry which is also supported with placement opportunities,” said David Bramston, senior lecturer in Product Design.
“At present students are considering placements in the United States, Australia and the Far East and it is anticipated that negotiations will take place with the two offices we visited in New York.”
Staff and students are looking forward to visiting the Milan Furniture Fair in April and will be in California early next year to visit some of America’s leading product and industrial designers.
“The first cohort of students will graduate in Product Design in 2005 and are expected to progress with a broad experience of global product design and an understanding of new technologies,” said Mr Bramston.
