Graphic Design students from the University of Lincoln gave BBC Radio Lincolnshire a helping hand when the station launched a new youth music show.

Presenter Nick Wilmshurst gave the students a week to come up with a design for a poster promoting the new ‘Friday Night Mix’ show on 94.9FM.

Six students following the National Diploma course in Graphic Design at the Lincoln School of Art & Design took part in the competition and the winners were Tom Yates and Sophie Gilbert.

Their poster design, which featured a mobile phone with a text message and the slogan ‘The weekend starts here’, can now be seen on display at venues across the city, including the university.

“Considering they had very little time to turn this project around the results were extremely good,” said Geoff Kitchen, course leader and senior lecturer in Graphic Design.

“It’s very important that students get to sample the constraints of the real world and work with clients who have deadlines that cannot be stretched.

“We can give them as many projects as we like, but there is no substitute for a real live job - just like the work they will experience in industry.”

Tom and Sophie won free tickets to an event at the Quayside bar on Waterside North in Lincoln which sponsors the show.

The ‘Friday Night Mix’ show is broadcast between 7pm and 9pm on Fridays on BBC Radio Lincolnshire.
