LINCOLN GRADUATE GETS A REAL RADIO JOB

Lincoln graduate Ed Dawes has taken another step up the ladder of journalism by landing a job as a news broadcast journalist at Real Radio in Cardiff.

The 24-year-old from Streetly in Sutton Coldfield completed a degree in Media Production and a Postgraduate Diploma in Print and Online Journalism before working for BBC Radio Derby, BBC London BBC Choice, BBC 3 and BBC East Midlands Today.

He’s due to start his new job in Cardiff next month where he will be broadcasting across the whole of South Wales.

“The job offers me a great chance in journalism,” says Ed. “Radio is my preferred medium and I know that I am capable of progressing quite far up the ladder.”

Ed has worked with a number of presenters from whom he says he has learned a great deal, including the late Christopher Price of the BBC’s Liquid News and BBC London News presenter Nina Hossain.

“I am learning all the time, but the best piece of advice I’ve had was written in a card by my mum,” says Ed. “I was taking my diploma final exams and she wrote: ‘Fail to prepare, prepare to fail’.”

“That’s something that all students should remember. If I don’t prepare before interviewing people I won’t produce my best work.”

Ed hopes to continue to improve as a radio journalist. “I want to be the best I can in the field I work in,” he says. “I want to be recognised for quality journalism and for people to hear my voice and think, I’ve heard him before and he’s good.

“I would totally recommend budding journalists to have a serious look at the Media and Journalism courses at Lincoln,” he added. “You’d be hard pressed to find a place with better equipment or more helpful staff.

“It was also of great benefit to have real journalists teaching the course who could share their knowledge of the business. I know one student who’s gone to do a media course at Lincoln on my recommendation and I know she is loving the experience.”
