Social Work students at the University of Lincoln have swapped text books for raffle tickets to help a local charity.

The students - who mostly live in the York area - are to stage a charity ball in Upper Poppleton near York on Saturday (23rd November) to raise funds for the York Special Care Baby Unit.

They’re organising the event for their Working Within Groups module which forms part of the Diploma in Social Work at the university’s Cottingham Road campus.

“As social workers we are committed to playing an active part within a community and this is often done within marginalized groups on the fringes of society,” said student John Bushell. “Group working is also undertaken within a professional and multi-agency setting, so the skills required to perform within these groups are crucial to the role of a social worker.”

The charity ball will take place from 8pm until 12pm on Saturday at the Upper Poppleton Community Centre near York.

The students have laid on a licensed bar with music provided by the local youth jazz band Spamjazz and a disco.

There will also be a grand raffle with prizes donated by local organisations, businesses and members of the group. Most of the 200 admission tickets have been sold but tickets should be available on the door.

“There has been a tremendous amount of work put into organising this event and we are well on the way to achieving our task and raising over £1,000 for the York Special Care Baby Unit,” said John.

“We are very proud to have gone through this process - it has not always been easy, but we have learned a great deal about our colleagues, how we interact with one another, about ourselves and about working in a group.”

The students plan to hand over the funds at a special presentation in the New Year.
