A scout group in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire will be benefiting from a successful lottery bid thanks to a student from the University of Lincoln.

Gary Beckett (21) from Gomersal, near Cleckheaton submitted the lottery bid as part of his BSc (Hons) in Recreation Management.

“The bid could either be made up or real,” said Gary, “so I chose to do a live bid as my mother and sister are leaders at the scout group and I was a member for 13 years.

“It took about three months to get confirmation about the funding. The bid was not a large amount so the process wasn’t too complicated.”

The 7th Spen Valley Scout Group situated on Shirley Road, Gomersal will receive nearly £2,700 which will be used to purchase a plot of land from the local authority.

“The scouts currently pay rent for the land but when the lease runs out the council will want the land back, so the best idea was to buy it.

“The group have spent the last few years fund-raising to pay for improvements to the hut and to purchase the land, so this will help a great deal.”
