20th March 2002
British rugby legend Garry Schofield OBE will be celebrating with the University of Lincoln‘s rugby league team at their annual prize giving ceremony this evening (Wednesday).
The former Great Britain captain, who played for Hull, Leeds and Huddersfield, is recognised as one of the finest players of his generation.
He was at the heart of Great Britain’s international revival in the 1980s and 1990s, making a joint record 46 appearances for Great Britain and skippering his country in the 1992 World Cup final.
Schofield was awarded the OBE for his services to rugby league in 1994.
“The university rugby league team is honoured to have such a prestigious player joining them and everyone is looking forward to the event,” said Adam Keating president of the squad.
“The awards ceremony takes place after our last match of the season and will definitely be a good way to celebrate the year.”
The buffet and award ceremony will take place in the Library Bar on campus today (Wednesday 20th March) at 7.30pm. Schofield will be speaking at the meal and presenting the awards, which will include ‘Player of the Year’ and ‘Man of Steel’ – an award that reflects the prize which Garry himself was voted in 1991.
