LINCOLN LAWYERS FLY THE FLAG IN NORTHERN HEAT

The growing national reputation of the University of Lincoln’s Department of Law was given a boost this weekend when a two-man team from Lincoln defeated all comers in the northern heat of The Negotiation Competition.

Paul Verrico (25) and Peter Ward (24) were hoping for a place in the top eight out of the 12 teams competing at the College of Law in York on Saturday (9th February).

But after a day of hard negotiating with other student lawyers the pair were amazed to be named winners of the heat, beating two teams from Cambridge (St John’s and Magdalene) and others from the Universities of Nottingham, York and Manchester.

“As the results were read out expectation heightened,” said Paul, of Kirton-in-Lindsey. “We knew that we had performed reasonably well and were hopeful of qualification.

“As places eight to four were announced our designated letter had still not come up, which meant that we were either in the top three or out of the heat altogether. And then the judges announced that the overall winners were Lincoln and there was a stunned silence!”

“That means that we go into the national final next month as one of the favourites with the name of Lincoln firmly at the forefront.”

The Negotiation Competition, sponsored by CEDR, Hammond Suddards Edge, CASTELL Consulting and The College of Law, gives law students the opportunity to practice and hone their negotiating techniques in front of teams of judges comprising solicitors, barristers, academics and business executives.

Students participate in teams of two, negotiating two scenarios set in a legal context in each round. Teams compete for a cup, cash prizes and the opportunity to represent England and Wales in the International Competition.

Eight teams from each regional competition qualify for the national finals to be held at the Inns of Court School of Law on Saturday 16th March 2002 and the four leading teams will then compete in the final round on Sunday 17th March 2002.

Peter Ward lives in Broughton, near Brigg.
