UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE STRIKE UP NEW PARTNERSHIP

The University of Lincoln and North Lincolnshire College are to embark on an educational partnership which will put the region at the forefront of education policy and development.

Senior staff from the two institutions will meet on Monday (29th October) to sign a unique partnership agreement to develop new foundation degrees and to validate new HE courses at the Monks Road campus.

“The government is placing access to higher education and progression opportunities at the top of its agenda,” said university Pro Vice Chancellor Derek Crothall. “Liaison and progression arrangements like the one between the university and the college will put Lincolnshire at the forefront of these developments and be a major step in achieving successful progression to HE for many more youngsters and older people.”

High on the agenda is a new foundation degree in sports science, which could be followed by foundation degrees in art and design, journalism, business studies, engineering, health and social care, computing and communications and food studies.

“The college is excited by the opportunity to now be able to work with the University of Lincoln and forge a close association which will meet with the ambitions of both institutions in making Lincoln a true learning city,” commented North Lincolnshire College principal John Allen.

Marilyn Hawkins, executive director of the Learning and Skills Council Lincolnshire and Rutland, said: “The LSC has assumed a major responsibility for working with young people and adults to ensure the building blocks are in place to meet the government’s target of having 50 per cent of 18-30 year olds in higher education by 2010.

“This partnership will make a major contribution to the needs of local communities throughout the county and provides a clear route into higher education for all our learners, no matter what age. The development of foundation degrees will also allow a new route into higher education for those who wish to base their studies in the workplace.”

The signing will take place in the Vice Chancellor’s Annexe at the Brayford Pool at 12.30pm on Monday 29th October.

Note: Foundation degrees are employer-led vocational two-year programmes which provide routes through to progression and HE level, typically by a third-year top-up to degree level.

HE provision at North Lincolnshire College is currently validated by Nottingham Trent University.
