27th September 2001

University students in Lincoln will join staff and VIPs next month to celebrate the launch of the new University of Lincoln.

Five years almost to the day after the opening of the Lincoln campus of the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside, the university will change its name, officially move its headquarters to Lincoln and unveil its new corporate identity.

The event, which will take place at the university sports centre from 12 noon on Monday 8th October 2001, will be preceded by a coach tour for VIP guests to view the campuses of the new University of Lincoln, including the Lincolnshire School of Agriculture at Riseholme and the Lincoln School of Art and Design.

At 12.30pm guests will be welcomed by the Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, Dame Elizabeth Esteve-Coll, and will hear speeches by the Vice Chancellor, Prof David Chiddick, the President of the Students’ Union Co-operative, Verity Coyle, and the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Kelvin Bray CBE.

The event will close at 3.30pm after a special live broadcast by Siren FM, the university’s student radio station, featuring a ‘University Challenge’ style quiz pitching staff and student teams from Lincoln, Hull and the former De Montfort University campuses together in a three-way contest.

The Lincoln campus of ULH was opened by the Queen on 11th October 1996 after the city and county raised £32 million to pay for construction costs. It was the first new university campus to be built anywhere in the UK for 25 years.

Five years later investment in the campus has passed £60 million and full-time undergraduate student numbers in Lincoln have reached 4,500.

Though the university has changed its name it retains its campuses in Hull. In 2003 it will consolidate its Hull activities on its city centre campus, where a £4 million investment is planned over the next five years.

Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend the launch event. There will be a photo opportunity relating to the university’s new corporate identity at 1.45pm.
