Celebrated Fleet Street snapper Mike Maloney says his 100th major award will be by far his most important.

He will reach his century of prizes when he receives an honorary degree from the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside at Lincoln Cathedral on Thursday 19th July.

And Lincoln-born Mike, who is Group Chief Photographer at Mirror Group Newspapers, says this tribute from the university of his home city is more important to him than all the other awards he has received throughout his glittering career.

“This means more to me than any of the other awards I’ve had because it comes from the city of my birth,” said Mike (50), who began his career shooting pictures for the Lincolnshire Chronicle and the Lincolnshire Echo.

“I’ve just been given a lifetime achievement award by the big Japanese photographic companies, but getting an honorary degree from the university in Lincoln will mean for me to me. It’s a great honour for me to be recognised like this and I’m very excited about it.”

Mike went to school in Lincoln and became interested in photography as a youngster after his father bought him a Kodak camera for his tenth birthday. He freelanced in Lincoln before taking the plunge and moving down to London in 1972 to work as a showbusiness photographer on the London Evening News.

His first major assignment was to cover Noel Coward’s birthday party at the Savoy. Since then he has travelled the world photographing personalities ranging from Max Bygraves and Shirley Bassey to Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan.

He will receive his honorary Doctorate of Arts at the university’s awards ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral at 11.30am on Thursday 19th July 2001.

Others who have been honoured by the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside include Michael Parkinson, the astronaut Michael Foale, Lord Rix, Lord Puttnam, John Godber, Maureen Lipman, Baroness Castle and Sir Norman Foster.
