Hull animation graduate Leigh Hodgkinson has won a short film commission to produce an animated film for art house cinemas across the UK.

Her film, ‘Matroyshka’, is one of only six films to be commissioned by Sonimation, a group funded by Sonic Arts and the Arts Council, who recognised Leigh as “one of Britain’s most exciting emerging artists”. The final screening is to take place on 5th July at the Lux in London.

Leigh (25), from Southampton, graduated in 1998 with a degree in Graphic Design, specialising in animation, from the Hull School of Art and Design and then worked at the Museum of the Moving Image on London’s South Bank before going on to study a postgraduate course at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield.

She now works for Pesky Animation in London and is delighted to have won the commission. “Winning a commission is something that so many starting out in the animation industry strives for. It takes a while to get your name out there so it’s really good exposure,” she said.

Demand for Leigh’s films has stretched as far as Europe’s animated film festivals. ‘Novelty’ was recently shown at the Annecy International Film Festival in France.

Alan Jeffrey, lecturer in Animation, is also delighted with the news: “It’s wonderful to see our graduates, of whom Leigh was always one of our best, achieve such recognition within a very competitive industry.”
