24th January 2001

The popular Cheltenham Open Drawing exhibition opens today (Wednesday) at the EICH (European Illustration Collection Hull) Gallery in George Street.

The gallery, which is part of the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside, is the only UK venue outside Cheltenham which displays the exhibition of 90 drawings.

The works were selected from over 1,000 submissions by a panel of experts which this year included art collector Doris Lockhart Saatchi.

The exhibition was shown in Cheltenham in September 2000 and will be on display at the EICH Gallery from today until 28th February.

The works will then move on to the Kunsthalle Sierre in Switzerland (24th March to 6th April) before being returned to the exhibitors.

“This is one of the few opportunities to see a wide variety of drawing styles all together, and it is one of our most popular exhibitions,” said Kathie Jenkins, curator of the EICH Gallery.

“Schools and colleges particularly value the exhibition as support for delivery of the art and design curriculum.”

Entry to the gallery is free and groups are encouraged to work in the gallery in front of the exhibits.

A private view will be held this evening (Wednesday 24th January 2001) between 6pm and 8pm.
