Lincoln is to host a major European conference on healthful or healthy foods in the summer of 2001.
The European Conference on Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods will be held from 29th to 31st August 2001 and is being organised by staff at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside in collaboration with the Institute for Food Safety (IFOS).
“Nutraceuticals and ‘functional’ foods represent one of the fastest growing areas of research and development leading to novel products intended for disease prevention and health promotion,” commented Dr Peter Quantick, director or research in the university’s Faculty of Social and Life Sciences.
“The healthful or healthy foods industry, which includes nutraceuticals, functional foods, fortified foods, supplements, organics and natural foods, has grown by between 10 and 20 per cent per year in terms of sales.
“The interest in this field by researchers, government organisations, the industry and consumers has been tremendous and is still expanding.
“This European conference is a response to a growing need for accurate scientific information on nutraceuticals and functional foods,” Dr Quantick added. “It will also provide a forum for exchanging of ideas and authoritative views by leading scientists and medical professionals as well as producers and market analysts in this exciting field.”
Through its Food Research Centre the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside has been involved in the area of food science and technology for over 30 years. All the university’s food research and teaching activities moved to Lincoln from Grimsby in the summer of 2000.
The Institute for Food Safety (IFOS) is an institute of the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside involved in the delivery of training courses, consultancy and research in the area of food safety and food hygiene.
