An award-winning university project that has now brought over 80 parents back into education has been short-listed for a Hull CityVision regeneration award.

The Parents and Children Working Together Project at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside won national recognition for its work when it was awarded the New Learning Opportunities Award 2000 certificate.

Co-ordinated by the Department of Social Sciences and Social Work, the project aims to attract parents back to education and local interest has snowballed, with demand almost exceeding the number of places available.

Project officer Kay Jarvis and managers Christine Sutcliffe, Joe Waller and Don Blackburn will attend a glittering award ceremony at the Jarvis International Hotel in Hull on Friday 17th November.

Head teachers from the participating schools and parents who currently co-deliver the course at their respective schools, will also be there when the award winner is announced.  The scheme was nominated by parent Sue Moon and Estcourt Primary School.

Parents who passed the computer-based ‘Learning to Learn’ courses run at Estcourt and Endike schools attended a special graduation ceremony at the university in July.

As part of her nomination Sue wrote: “If it hadn’t been for this course I would still be sat at home facing an uncertain career. I now feel I am keeping up with the changing times, and improving my prospects for my future. My children have also benefited as we share with each other what we have learned.”

“We were delighted to receive the certificate of achievement from the New Learning Opportunities 2000 and we’re absolutely thrilled to be nominated for this award,” said Kay.

Fifty-four new ‘students’ are about to become the next cohort, starting soon at Fifth Avenue Primary School, Endike Primary and Escourt Primary schools. Some of the 19 graduates of previous courses will be taking a leading role in passing on their new-found skills after taking part in training sessions.
