A student from the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside’s Food Research Centre has won first prize in a prestigious competition for young scientists.


Donglin Zhang took first prize in the postgraduate category, winning a £250 cheque and a microscope set in perspex which is now on proud display at the Food Research Centre in Grimsby. Donglin and fellow ULH student Fatih Ozogul were two of just four students shortlisted for the section.


The competition, held on Wednesday at the University of Salford, was sponsored by  big names such as Unilever, and involved all universities from the north of England. Donglin and Fatih Ozogul made presentations on their food science and technology research.


Head of the Food Centre Prof Tony Taylor said his department was extremely proud of both thier achievements at getting shortlisted for the competition.


Prof Taylor has been re-elected as chairman of the Food Commodities and Ingredients Group, which encourages students to take up careers in food science and provides a forum for the debate of food issues by members from all areas of research, industry and advisory services.
