University consultants will be advising businesses in the Grimsby and Scunthorpe areas on how to become more environmentally friendly as part of a new European-funded project.

David Grantham, Louisa Hatton and Neil Cartwright from the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside’s EPICentre will work with over 100 companies to promote environmental awareness and pass on an understanding of the financial benefits of ‘green’ practices.

The Lincoln campus-based EPICentre secured European Regional Development Fund money for the project, which will run until May 2001. The companies involved will benefit from free and confidential advice.

Project Officer Louisa Hatton will be working in Scunthorpe area. “We will be helping the businesses reduce their environmental impact by looking at their water use and waste production and to see what can be done to improve each company’s efficiency and performance.”

The project is aimed at businesses with fewer than 250 employees where the size of the workforce means they may not have the resources to address the issues of environmental management.

The consultants will advise them on how they can actually capitalise on the benefits of improved environmental performance and become more competitive.
