IT’S A REPORTER’S LIFE FOR SCUNTHORPE STUDENT

A Scunthorpe student got his foot in the door at the town’s daily newspaper after competing to become one of the new journalism scholars at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.

Darren Barrett will study on the three-year BA (Hons) Journalism degree programme at the Lincoln campus but he will also work two days a week alongside the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph’s regular reporters.

The scheme was first launched last September and scholars from the Hull Daily Mail and Lincolnshire Echo are now entering their second year at the Lincoln campus.

A former student at John Leggott College, Darren was chosen for the scheme after completing a work trial and passing an interview.

“I would like to get into sports reporting eventually,” said Darren (19), from Henderson Avenue. “I will be able to get hands-on experience as well as a degree which is a great combination.”

Mark gained a distinction in GNVQ Media (advanced) but he was formerly a pupil of St Bede’s School in the town.

“”It’s a very friendly atmosphere at the Telegraph and I’m really looking forward working there,” he added.
