IT’S A REPORTER’S LIFE FOR SKEGNESS STUDENT

A Skegness teenager got his foot in the door at Lincoln’s daily newspaper after competing to become one of the new Lincolnshire Echo scholars at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.

Mark Whiley, from Sandbeck Avenue, will be a full-time student on the three-year BA (Hons) Journalism degree programme but he will work one day a week alongside the Echo’s regular reporters.

The scheme was first launched last September and three Hull Daily Mail scholars are now entering their second year at the Lincoln campus.

A former student at Boston College, Mark was chosen for the scheme after completing a week’s trial at the Echo in April.

“I would like to get into sports reporting eventually,” said Mark (18), who’s moving into halls of residence this weekend. “I will be able to get hands-on experience as well as a degree which is a great combination.”

Mark studied BTEC Media at Boston College, where he learned about print editing and interviewing techniques which he hopes will stand him in good stead at the Echo.

“The campus looks like a great place to study because everything’s so new, and the accommodation looks fantastic,” he added.
