The chairman of British Airways will be in Hull next month to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.


Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge will attend one of the university’s graduation ceremonies at Hull City Hall on Wednesday 19th July to be honoured with a Doctorate of Laws for his services to travel and tourism.


Lord (Colin) Marshall spent ten years with the airline, initially as chief executive, before being appointed chairman of British Airways Plc in February 1993. Since January 1996 he has been the company’s non-executive chairman.


From May 1996 until July 1998 Lord Marshall was president of the CBI (Confederation of British Industry). His many chairmanships include those of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the Britain in Europe campaign and the London Development Partnership.


He was created a Life Peer in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 1998 having been made a Knight Bachelor in 1987. He is married with one daughter.


On Thursday 20th July 2000 (pm) an honorary Doctorate of Letters will be awarded to Prof Bhikhu Parekh, Professor of Political Theory at Hull University.


A graduate of the University of Bombay, Prof Parekh taught at the London School of Economics and at Harvard University before returning to India as Vice Chancellor of the University of Baroda (1981-4).


He has been deputy chairman and chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality and has broadcast frequently on politics and race relations in Britain. He has just been appointed one of 33 new working peers by the Prime Minister.


Andrew Milner, assistant chief executive at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, will receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws on the afternoon of Wednesday 19th July for his outstanding contribution to higher education.


He was a governor of the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside from 1998 to 1999 and is also involved with the St John Ambulance, the Holy Trinity Church Restoration Appeal, Hull 700 and the Lifelong Learning Partnership.
