A Spanish student who came to Grimsby four years ago as an exchange student from Barcelona will be in Hull on Friday to collect his doctorate from the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.

Dr Pedro Panisello came to the UK on an academic exchange from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1995.

He so impressed his tutors at the Grimsby campus that his mentor, Dr Peter Quantick, acquired additional funding to allow Pedro to study for a PhD at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.

“Funds were limited at times and Pedro even had a spell working as an information officer at the university’s Food Innovation Centre in Grimsby,” Dr Quantick recalled.

“He completed his PhD last year and has now returned home to Spain to run a food safety and quality consultancy in his home town of Tortosa.”

Pedro will be at Hull City Hall at 11.30am on Friday (21st January) to collect his doctorate along with around 300 other graduates at the university’s winter awards ceremony.

He will be joined on the trip by members of his family - perhaps even by his uncle Federico Mayor, who was Director-General of UNESCO until last year.
