UNI RECRUITING JOBLESS FOR TRAINING SCHEME

 

The University of Lincolnshire & Humberside is preparing for the second intake on its

training programme to help the jobless update their skills.

 

‘Pathways to Employment’ can be studied at the university’s Lincoln campus and at Lincolnshire Regional Access Centres throughout the county. It offers training at the equivalent of NVQ level four and is free to all participating students unemployed and actively seeking work.

 

In addition to courses in effective learning, employability, information technology and the Internet, the university is adding new units in marketing, communication and persuasion, history and international relations. Courses in the New Year begin on 31st January 2000.

 

“The scheme that we launched in the summer was so successful that we have expanded it for 2000,” said Sue Brisland, the project officer co-ordinating ‘Hi Skills 2000 - Pathways to Employment’ for the university.

 

“We are targeting unemployed people throughout Lincolnshire whose qualifications and experience are insufficient to land them a job in the current employment market.”

 

Successful completion of the course after a minimum of 15 weeks of study will earn students a Certificate of Continuing Education from the university and a greatly improved chance of finding meaningful and rewarding employment, Sue added.

 

Unique features of the scheme include financial help with travel arrangements and childcare, professional guidance and counselling and an interview with the Lincolnshire Careers and Guidance Service to develop a career action plan.

Courses comprise five units. Students study the Effective Learning Programme (learning skills, IT, presentation, writing and project management), Employability and Career Development (how to write a CV, how to prepare for interviews and study of the labour market) and two subject units (e.g. desktop publishing, marketing, information technology, international relations or others as appropriate to their career plans).

 

Ray Grisby, a 49-year-old Lincoln man who has been unemployed for three years, says the ‘Pathways to Employment’ programme has boosted his confidence and greatly enhanced his job prospects.

 

“Being in an academic environment and having access to all the facilities is very encouraging,” he said. “You get out of the course what you put into it - it’s really down to the student.

 

“It’s certainly benefited me,” added Ray, of Burton Road, Lincoln. “After three years of unemployment I was feeling somewhat deserted, but this course has given me more enthusiasm for another attack on the job market with a much more structured approach.

 

“I’m already feeling a lot more confident about getting a job,” he said. “The course is not a holiday - you have to commit yourself to it and work hard at the studying. But it stretches your imagination and open up so many more options.”
