OVERCOMING THE ODDS FOR DEGREE

Most students find three years’ work a hard slog, but one woman overcame what many would perceive as insurmountable difficulties to achieve her degree.

Twenty-six-year-old Sarah Ward from Brantingham near Beverley, has two young children but was quite determined to complete her BA (Hons) Architecture programme, which she did with flying colours.

On the day she heard news of her 2:1, which was just a few points away from a first, Sarah was awarded the Cliff Hansford Prize for Endeavour.

Head of Architecture Derek Cottrell said: “We are proud of Sarah’s achievement and she is a very worthy recipient for this prize.”

Sarah, who began her academic career with an HND in Interior Design from Bishop Burton College, has won funding to create a work of art for a possible new sculpture park at St Andrew’s Quay which she hopes will be the first of many.
