A professor with 30 years’ experience in community development has been has been elected president of an influential international organisation.

The International Association for Community Development (IACD) tackles the issues of world-wide social problems. Professor of Social Policy Gary Craig from the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside has been made the new president.

The IACD brings together practitioners and policy makers and has a membership spanning 80 countries. The organisation has consultative status with the United Nations, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Prof Craig heads an executive of 20 delegates from all regions of the world including Pakistan, South Africa, Australia, Egypt, Thailand and Costa Rica.

“This is both an amazing honour and a challenge,” said Prof Craig. “At a time when the neo-liberal economic restructuring driven by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank is destroying the economies and political systems of many countries, it is absolutely crucial that means are found to give ordinary people a strong voice in development.”
