Hull School of Architecture graduate Stuart Harley is getting a taste of the good life in east Africa - his work for Folkers Van Buiten Wilks Ltd is currently taking him all over Tanzania and Uganda.

Stuart is ‘hot-desking’ between the firm’s offices in Dar es Salaam and Kampala which are responsible for six bush hospitals and a number of commercial projects. Site visits regularly take Stuart through national parks and into border areas where the risk of rebel raids from the Congo and Sudan adds an exciting dimension to contract management!

Stuart celebrated his birthday recently by taking a trip on the river Nile to see hippos, crocodiles and waterfalls. “It’s very hard to get stressed about work as it’s so easy to relax,” he said. “One way to wind down is to float in the Indian Ocean - it’s just like walking into a hot bath - and then having a beer and a meal at one of the new restaurants that are springing up.”

Stuart, who studied a postgraduate Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside, is now trying to decide between returning to Hull to study and extending his contract in Africa.
