Welcome from Dr Alec Shepley, Head of School
The Lincoln School of Art & Design forms a significant feature within the cultural quarter of the city and just one of the School’s strengths is its strong studio culture. In the School you will find a range of distinctive studio environments each demonstrating a close relationship to their own specific contexts and teaching and research methods.
You will find the School is a friendly and inviting ‘ideas factory’ and that it is an enjoyable and professional environment to study and learn. You will quickly build an idea of what it is like being a student here by talking to our staff and more importantly, meeting our students. We will guide you through the application process and provide you with the right balance of challenge and support throughout your period of study with us.
The undergraduate portfolio of programmes includes Animation, Conservation and Restoration, Contemporary Lens Media, Creative Advertising, Fashion Studies, Fine Art, Furniture Design and Practice, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interactive Design and Product Design. There are also opportunities for our students to combine some elements of study.
The postgraduate portfolio of programmes includes Masters in Conservation of Historic Objects, Conservation Studies graduate Diploma, Design (including a range of design disciplines) Fine Art and Illustration. There are also opportunities to undertake research in Art & Design e.g. MRes, MPhil and PhD enabling students to achieve the highest possible qualifications. There are also opportunities to engage in research degrees in the areas of Art and Design History and related cultural theory.
School staff are actively engaged in the practice of their own subject which can be evidenced through their research outputs such as, exhibitions, books and articles, projects, conference papers and the recent Research Assessment Exercise. Several staff have been awarded Teaching Fellowships and many are also involved in organising exhibitions, overseas arts residencies and have membership of professional bodies and societies. In addition to the permanent staff teams there is a very good range of visiting staff and students benefit greatly from interactions with them and the external links they bring.

The School also maintains the Greestone Gallery, which has
recently hosted shows from visiting American artists Richard Snyder
and Susan Moore, and Chuck Schmidt. Additionally it provides good
opportunities for students and staff to curate shows and exhibit
their own work.
Students are supported through all programmes to get involved in the
practice of their subject beyond the university experience. This
takes place through exhibiting work, entering student and
professional level competition, through work placements in the UK
and overseas, and through meeting specialists who visit the
University to give presentations.
We are very proud of the achievements of our students who
continually gain recognition for their endeavours from employers,
national bodies and organisations. As a result the students find
relevant employment and go on to become influential contributors to
the cultural industries.
Increasingly, students are selecting to extend their studies at
masters and doctoral levels pursuing specific interests that are
made available by our investment in physical and human resources.
Coupled to this development is the growing relationship between the
Art & Design subject area and the University’s ‘learning landscapes’
agenda. This is highlighting the significance of where and how we
teach and students learn in Art & Design and the relevance and
currency of our teaching and underpinning research. Inclusion in
contemporary debates helps to ensure that our students leave their
courses with skills that enable them to contribute to society and
the economy in significant and meaningful ways.

There is a very strong ‘Art School ethos’ and if you are thinking of studying at the Lincoln School of Art & Design, whether it is at undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral/research levels you can get more detailed information about each course from this website, or visit us on Open Days to meet staff and students and to see end of year shows.
