Research Group Language of Visual Form
The three main foci of my practice based research are; language and sound as visual form within a cross disciplinary practice, artists books as time-based media and the visual depiction of environments, with particular regard to a sense of place, time and cultural specificity.
Theoretical and historical research is focused on cross disciplinary practice and depictions of language in early European Modernism. Interest in this area started when completing an MA in the History of Modern Art and Design at Falmouth College of Arts and now continues with an MPhil/PhD within the Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of Lincoln.
Current research is underpinned by practical experience working in the fields
of; graphic design, illustration,
mural painting, gallery exhibitions of prints, drawings, collages and paintings
and self published artists
books. The main threads of my research help both my activities as a practitioner
and as a teacher.
Teaching ranges across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the
School of Design with
subject taught including; graphic design practice, visual studies, design
history and critical studies.

Current Research
The three main foci of my practice based research are; language and sound as visual form within a cross disciplinary practice, artists books as time-based media and the visual depiction of environments, with particular regard to a sense of place, time and cultural specificity. The primary focus of my theoretical and historical research is focused on cross-disciplinary practice and depictions of language in early European Modernism. The primary audience aimed at are those practitioners and historians interested in how the interaction between different creative practices have impacted on how language and sound have been communicated.
Current and forthcoming research activity includes; an MPhil/PhD at the University of Lincoln concerned with the work of Kurt Schwitters, and curating an exhibition concerned with cross disciplinary practice at the beginning of the new century. Other activities include;
A written article responding to the question ‘why don’t designers draw?’ An essay exploring the supposed demise of drawing as a skill essential to graphic designers for a publication of the same name.
Stonebow [working title]. Outputs: exhibition, artists books and time-based installation. A body of work exploring time. Space and cultural specificity through the use of static and time-based media.
