Barrie TullettBarrie Tullett grew up in Walthamstow, East London - studying at St. Martins School of Art and Chelsea School of Art. Between these educational experiences he worked as a Screen Printer and as a Paste-up Artist.

After graduating he worked as a freelance designer and illustrator for clients as varied as The Science Museum (his drawings are part of the National Collection), The Central Office of Information, The Design Centre, The London Underground and The Poetry Society.

He moved to Edinburgh in 1991, where he worked for The List magazine and for The Edinburgh College of Art as Course Leader in Graphic Design. From there he went on to teach at The Glasgow School of Art before moving down south again to become Senior Lecturer at The University of Lincoln, currently teaching Graphic Design within The Lincoln School of Art & Design.

As 3rd year course co-ordinator he has seen the staff team encourage the Graphic Design students to achieve a huge amount of success, both in terms of national and international competition results as well as work placements and full time employment within the Graphic Design industry. The course is extremely lucky to have such a highly motivated and dedicated group of lecturers, one with a diverse range of interests that continue to build a strong studio culture within the student experience. In which it aims to develop the particular interests of each individual student within the framework of the course.

Barrie continues to work as a freelance graphic designer - his clients have included Canongate Books, the Polygon Press, Birlinn Ltd., John Donald Publishers, The Chase, True North, The Scottish Poetry Library, the Edinburgh University Press, Princeton University Press and Penguin Books. He is a member of the Typographic Circle, D&AD and the international Society of Typographic Designers and has been a regular part of the judging panel for their student assessment scheme.

Examples of his work have appeared in Eye magazine, Graphics International, Émigré, baseline, MAP and Creative Review.

Exhibitions include Meta Metier (Parsons, New York), Sale or Return (The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh) and True To Type Too (The Andrew Grant Gallery, Edinburgh). Work has also been exhibited in Evolution House (Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh) and The Academy of Fine Arts, Wroclaw, Poland. His book 'The Ghost in the Fog' has been exhibited internationally as part of the 5th International Artist's Book Triennial Vilnius.

He has acted as external assessor for the BA(Hons Graphic Design courses at Leeds College of Art & Design and the University of Greenwich and is currently the external assessor for the BA(hons) illustration course at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art, Dundee and the MA/MFA Communication course at Kingston University, London.

Alongside Philippa Wood he runs The Caseroom Press, a venture he began in 1995 whilst teaching at the Edinburgh College of Art. The Caseroom Press is an independent publisher based in Edinburgh and Lincoln. Their books and magazines have been reviewed in The Scotsman, The Times and The Guardian as well as MAP and Eye Magazines. They have recently been featured in the education section of baseline, (International TypoGraphics magazine). Their books have been purchased for national and international collections, including The Tate Library and they received a number of awards and nominations, including the Cream Awards, Roses Awards, the British Book Design and Production Awards, D&AD and the International Society of Typographic Designers Awards.
