International Conference on Litigation Funding
Professor John Peysner and Dr Angus Nurse participated in an International Conference on Litigation Funding at the University of Oxford on 19 May 2010.
The event was part of a collaborative research project between Lincoln law School's Centre for Dispute Resolution Compensation and Risk and Oxford's Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. The research investigates the cost of litigation and ways it can be best funded. Following discussion at the conference a report on the research is currently being prepared. Further details of the conference can be found at the conference website.
Consultation on Civil Sanctions Pilot
The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) has launched a consultation on the pilot operation of civil sanction powers for consumer law enforcers.
In July 2009 the Government published its consumer white paper. One of the proposals in the paper was to undertake a pilot programme for civil sanctions for consumer law enforcers. The aim of the civil sanctions is to provide alternatives to criminal prosecutions in certain cases, and a possible route for compensation for consumers who have lost out as a result of consumer law infringements.
The pilot programme is intended to run in around ten Local Authority Trading Standards Areas. The Consultation ends on 28 May 2010 and details can be found on the BIS website.
