Teaching

Since September 2005 I have taught Research & Professional Practice for MA Journalism, MA Sports Journalism, and MA Science & Environmental Journalism in the LSJ. This year (2010) students from the new MA Community Radio Programme join the module. In 2008/9 I became co-ordinator for Research & Professional Practice and Final Project modules. Though I supervise dissertations on all subjects, I specialise in the analysis of visual culture in journalism.

Research

My doctoral research focuses on an examination of 1901 Boer War cartoons by Linley Sambourne of Punch and Jean Veber of Assiette au Beurre. My studies are based on an assessment of how headline representation of cartoons combines artistic exaggeration with a critical version of historic truth, and how this reflects the magazines' portrayal of the war.

I researched and wrote material for Jane Chapman's book Contemporary Issues in Documentary (Polity) published in 2009. The Journal of International Communications published an article based on a chapter from my PhD thesis.

I have been employed as a research assistant on two funded projects, one small grant by the British Academy (completed) and the other a large award by the Economic Science Research Council, both studies led by Dr Chapman.
