The School of Humanities' friendly and approachable teaching
staff have extensive experience of providing full-time and part-time
courses. If you choose to study with us, you will be taught by
well-qualified and experienced lecturers and professors whose
class-room teaching has been given the top rating by external
assessors. Teaching and learning methods are up-to-date, emphasising
student-centred approaches and independent learning. Coursework
assessment is the norm rather than formal examinations, and
assessment methods are very varied, including the evaluation of
presentations, portfolios and projects in addition to the usual
academic essays. You will work individually and in groups within an
ethos which emphasises care for the progress of all of our students.
Single and joint honours
You can choose to take either a single honours or joint programme.
The joint degrees can be either between subjects within the
department or with programmes offered by other departments. You may
want to consider taking a subject which you have not studied before,
such as Drama and History, and our Open Days offer opportunities to
talk about these as well as our more well-known subjects such as
English, Drama and History.
Knowledge and skills
We aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills which will
enable them to find rewarding careers. In order to achieve this we
offer not only the opportunity to study subjects in depth, but also
the chance to acquire a range of highly marketable and transferable
skills. These include the ability to communicate effectively using a
range of media, familiarity with information technology, and
research skills. The ability to work effectively as a member of a
team is rated very highly by employers and this is developed in all
our courses.
Student experience
In addition to work for your course of study, there is a wide range
of other activities which will enhance your experience during your
student years. For example, there is an extensive programme of talks
by external speakers, and opportunities to develop your creative
writing. You can experience and take part in drama productions, and
Siren FM, the community radio station originated with and supported
by, the Department of Humanities.
