Hull School of Health and Social Care

Head of the School of Health and Social Care (Hull and Lincoln campuses)

Malcom Golightley

As Head of School I have the management responsibility for the School which is one of the largest in the University and we like to think one of the most dynamic. With a staff group of around 40 academics and developing research interests the School is a very lively and positive one to be involved with.

At our modern campus in Lincoln we have a range of programmes including Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Health Sciences, Nursing, Social Work and the Certificate in Science. At our established city centre campus in Hull we offer qualifying Social Work, Child and Youth Studies, Early Years and Social Neuroscience. Whatever the programme we aim to provide first class education that builds on student strengths and will gives students the necessary attributes that employers are seeking.

Personal

I am a professional qualified social worker with practice expertise in mental health and working with young people. I have worked in the Newcastle upon Tyne area where I completed my professional qualification. I have worked as a practitioner and manager in both the statutory and in the not for profit sectors. I have spent a year in the USA on a scholarship part sponsored through Fulbright and worked at a Forensic Unit for disturbed young offenders.

My post graduate studies were at the University of York where under the supervision of Prof. Kay Jones I carried out a major study following up patients who had been discharged from psychiatric hospitals. Following this experience I moved into Higher Education with the University and have been here since 1985.

Teaching Areas

I teach a range of undergraduate courses including helping students to develop knowledge informed practice, supervising independent studies and teaching with Don Blackburn a third level theory course.
I am an external examiner for the University of Keele and the University of Edinburgh.

Practice Interests

I am registered with the General Social Care Council as a social worker. I have maintained my interests and up-to-datedness until recently by being a member of the Mental Health Act Commission and since then working as a locum consultant to the Health Care Commission. I continue my interests in improving the standards of care experienced by service users.

Research Interests

My main interests are in mental health and closely related topics. Thus I have carried out funded research examining the effectiveness of Crisis Resolution Services, the need for community based mental health services etc. More recently I have begun researching deliberate self- harm among young people largely from their perspective. I have an interest in the use of seclusion in private mental health hospitals and will be carrying out a national project in this area in the next 12 months.
