In-sessional Support

Studying at a university can be challenging, which is why the English Language Centre offers a range of in-sessional support to help you during your time here in Lincoln. The English Language Centre tutors are experts in English language teaching and learning and will help you gain confidence in communicating effectively in your academic studies. You will also have the opportunity to improve your social language skills, better understand British culture and meet students from all over the world.

The Lincoln English Language Assessment (LELA)

All students registering with the English Language Centre must complete a short assessment called the Lincoln English Language Assessment (LELA).  This will help determine which in-sessional courses will be most helpful to them.  Following the assessment, there will be a short presentation and the opportunity to ask questions.  Students usually receive their LELA results and their Individual Learning Plan (ILP) by email within 4 working days of taking the LELA.

It is recommended that students take the LELA as soon as possible after arrival at the University.  By taking the LELA early, students have a better chance of securing a place on their chosen in-sessional courses.

Further information about the LELA is available on the English Language Centre website.

Courses

The University’s English Language Centre offers a range of free courses to current students.  Once students have completed the LELA, they can register for courses such as:

  • Active Listening
  • Better Pronunciation
  • Culture and Conversation
  • English for Dissertation Writing
  • Effective Presentation Skills
  • Grammar for Academic Writing
  • Seminar Discussion Skills

Classes usually take place after 4:00pm, to reduce chances of clashes with timetabled lessons. To find a list of courses currently on offer and request a place on a course, visit the English Language Centre website.

Drop-In (One-to-one support)

If you need individual help with any English language problem, the ELC’s Drop-in service is the perfect place to go.  The experienced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) tutors offer individual consultations to help you with a variety of English language issues.

Tutors can advise on: a covering letter, an academic assignment, pronunciation and more.   Feedback on academic assignments includes advice on how to avoid grammatical mistakes, how to improve your sentence structure and paragraphing.  Please note, this is not a proof-reading or an editing service but the tutor can show you how to improve your writing.

Drop-in takes place every weekday, Monday – Friday between 12:00pm and 2:00pm.  There are also some evening appointments at specific times during the year.

For further information and to book an appointment visit the English Language Centre website.
