AD agency relates to student's winning campaign
Design student Daniel Measures from the University of Lincoln has been short-listed for a major national advertising award.
Daniel (20), who studies Interactive and Screen-Based Graphics at the Lincoln School of Art and Design, was one of the winners in the MPA Roses Student Creativity Awards.
He produced an ad campaign for the counselling service Relate in response to the brief ‘It’s all about communications’ set by the ad agency Taxi Studio.
At a judging and exhibition event held at Manchester Metropolitan University he found out that he’d won two to four weeks’ work experience at Taxi Studio in Bristol.
The winner from each brief secures a work placement with the agency that set the brief and of these seven students three will be awarded a gold, silver or bronze award.
“My advertising campaign for Relate was designed in the same way as the identity incorporating a taped up rip,” says Daniel, who originally comes from Glyndwr in Gwynedd.
“The rip helps to make the advertising very energetic and exciting, something I feel Relate advertising needs to do.
“All of the advertising is situated in very public areas where media coverage is at its greatest, which helps to eliminate the stigma some people might associate with Relate.”
The hopeful students will get together at the Roses Advertising Awards on Thursday 4th May at the Palace Hotel in Manchester to find out if they’ve won an award.
D&AD success
The D&AD is the annual student design competition that offers students the opportunity to work on a project of their choice from a selection of graphic design disciplines. The nominated designs represent the very best of student graduate work and are judged by professional designers.
Two ISBG students successfully achieved D&AD awards this year which included a coveted yellow pencil and a cheque for £400; Alex Clapham won second prize in the applied graphic design category, whilst Amanda Barks also came second in the brand identity category with successful designs for Snapple.
"I am pleased my final solution was chosen as it’s a good opportunity to showcase my work to a wider audience, and I really wanted a yellow pencil!"
Alex Clapham - Level 3
"I never thought I would win anything this year but to win two awards is so cool. The D&AD is a real achievement as it’s based on your ideas, it is a such a great feeling to think that someone understands and likes your idea, it just makes all the hard work worthwhile. I entered Snapple and my idea was pretty simple – I designed a typeface made from drinking straws, which took me ages! From this I designed a range of products including bottles, van livery and billboards. I can’t tell you how cool it feels to have won a D&AD award, I had a smile on my face all day."

Students with designs on success
Two level 3 students – Chris Keller and Amanda Barks successfully achieved membership to the International Society of Typographic Designers via the student assessment scheme.
"I think I selected the best brief for me as it enabled me to push the limits of journal design and consider working in different ways to my usual style. Research played a key part and it was worth all the late nights to hear that I had achieved the award"
