Why learn a language?
Demand for graduates with qualifications in languages is higher than ever in today’s globalised economy. And in a job market which is particularly competitive, being able to communicate with speakers of other languages can give you a definite edge. The CBI claims that more than a third of British businesses hire people for their languages skills. You don’t have to be a fluent linguist, but having the skill of being able to converse in a language other than your own is a real bonus.
“74% of UK firms look for conversational language and intercultural competence skills rather than fluency” (Worton 2009)
Languages at the University of Lincoln are delivered by the highly experienced staff of Languages Centre, part of the Lincoln Business School.
We offer French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.
Our Languages Centre proves that language learning can be fun! We keep our classes smaller than in schools and you will have plenty of opportunity to practise, given the strong International focus of the Faculty. We also have self access resources in the library to help with your learning.
Our languages classes are OPEN TO ALL – current students, members of the public and employees of the University.
The Classes
Courses run for 12 weeks starting in September and January. Each weekly session lasts two hours. All courses carry University credits worth 15 CATs (Credit Accumulation Transfer points), and you also receive a Certificate of Achievement on successful completion.
Our tutors are a mixture of native and taught speakers, and classes are usually under 20 students. You will be assessed by our tutors to put you in a class that matches your level.
Classes for beginners
Languages Available: French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.
These modules are designed for students who wish to learn a new language from scratch and be introduced to a new culture. You will develop the basic language skills needed to survive a trip abroad. You will learn through taking part in role-plays and short conversations and using videos and authentic reading and listening materials. The emphasis is on speaking and listening.
(Mandarin Chinese is also available at “post beginners” - between beginners and intermediate levels).
Classes For Intermediate Speakers
Languages Available: French, German and Spanish
These courses are designed for students who already have a GCSE or equivalent in the language but who wish to improve their level. You will develop strong foundations in the language through participation in in-class conversations. You will concentrate on listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. There will also be the opportunity to learn more about the culture associated with the language you are learning.
Classes For Advanced Speakers
Languages Available: French, German and Spanish
These courses are designed for students who already have an A-Level or equivalent in the language but who wish to improve their ability. This level is all about confidence in your language skills in order that you can develop autonomous communication. Most of the sessions at Advanced level will be conducted in the foreign language, and an emphasis will be placed on using the correct register when speaking and writing. Cultural sensitivity will also be explored, as will grammatical accuracy and lexical precision.
When do the classes take place?
Language classes will be scheduled at various times throughout the week. The 12 week courses start in September and January. All our beginner classes are offered as early evening classes (between 4pm and 8pm).
Timetables are available mid-September and will be posted to this web page as soon as we have them. Alternatively please email lbs@lincoln.ac.uk and we will add your name/email address to a list to send you the timetable when it becomes available.
How much will it cost?
The cost is £154 per course. This covers 12 weeks at 2 hours per week plus assessment and includes full access to our multimedia language resources for the duration of the course.
How do I start?
Our next set of classes start during week beginning 26th September.
We are offering taster sessions during week beginning 19th September. Alternatively, come along to the first lesson of the class you would like to attend (timetables will be available mid-September). You will have an opportunity at that class to meet the tutor and experience your first lesson. You will be told at that session how to enrol on your course and pay your fees, which you will have to do that before you attend the next lesson.
If you are unsure about which level/class you should attend at please contact us using the details overleaf. If you are unsure where a room is please call us and we can direct you.
