Introduction to Cognitive & Behavioural Approaches in Mental Health Care

This course seeks to introduce students to a cognitive behavioural framework that can enhance existing knowledge and skills and be safely applied during everyday encounters with service users.

The course aims to develop professionally qualified mental health practitioners’ awareness and understanding of cognitive-behavioural framework and to enable them to be able to critically apply some core approaches within their clinical work with service users. As such emphasis will be placed upon enhancing the student’s ability to effectively link theory with practice

The core curriculum include

  • A critical understanding of cognitive and behavioural theory and its application to routine clinical practice
  • Exploration of how a cognitive and behavioural understanding of mental health problems interfaces with holistic, person-centred recovery approaches to mental health care.
  • An introduction to, and development of basic cognitive-behaviourally informed skills
  • Discussion of how cognitive-behaviourally informed skills can safely and effectively be deployed in routine clinical practice
  • Reflection on the implications of professional role developments, including the ethical and legal dimensions of professional practice
  • Reflection on the impact of learning on each individual student’s knowledge and skills.

Courses are 8 weeks in duration, 1 day per week.
