MA Playwriting and Script Development

This practice-based programme develops students’ playwriting alongside the skills of script reading and script editing.
It sets out to work with new playwrights and develop their playwriting alongside the specific skills and knowledge required for working in a theatre’s literary department as a script reader and script editor. The course is run in partnership with the Broadway Theatre, London, and in the second semester students are attached to the theatre to develop the writing of emerging playwrights while continuing to produce their own work. A practice-based programme, students will be working on their own plays throughout the course, building to a substantial final degree show in the summer.
The programme is delivered by a professional team of script readers, editors and playwrights at both theUniversity of Lincoln and the Broadway Theatre, London. Students have access to the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, including its recently refurbished black box space in Studio 1.
Students work at the Broadway Theatre, London site and benefit from the facilities there. In terms of links with industry the programme is developed in partnership with a professional theatre company with an international profile.
Aims
The programme aims to produce students with a professional grounding in the work of a script reader and editor. A practice-based programme, students will be working on their own plays throughout the course building to a substantial final degree show in the summer.

Semester A
- Dramaturgy

Semester B
- Script Development (Broadway Theatre, London)

Semester C
- Final degree showcase.
Dramaturgy and Performance Writing are taken in the first semester where students begin experimenting with form in their own work while investigating the concept of “a play” and all that this entails. In the second semester, students are attached to the Broadway Theatre London for one session a week where they will work with new writers and mentor them through the script development process. Students also take the module Research Methods in this semester where they will work alongside other practice-based Master’s students from Dance, Directing and Producing. Through an understanding of research methodologies, students will form the structure and parameters of their final degree piece which occurs over the summer period.
Teaching & Assessment
The programme is delivered by a professional team of script readers, editors and playwrights at both the University of Lincoln and the Broadway Theatre London.
Assessment occurs at each module and consists of practical work (such as a draft script) as well as critical reflection on the script development process itself.
Facilities
Students have access to the LPAC facility including its recently refurbished black box space in Studio 1. Students will also work at the Broadway Theatre London site and benefit from the facilities there.
Links With Industry
The programme is developed in partnership with a professional theatre company with an international profile.
Careers
Graduates of this programme will be well placed to work in theatres with new writing programmes as well as begin the process of placing their own work. The skills developed for script reading for the stage are transferable to other media such as TV, film and new media where many new opportunities are emerging.
