Introduction

The research group has a wide experience in food science and technology, which it applies with direct industry links.

The award of Master of Philosophy (MPhil)/Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) can be obtained through undertaking research study at the University of Lincoln. Each student has an approved programme of research during which specialist knowledge of a field is acquired and research skills are developed. The part-time option is ideal if you are currently employed in the industry and wish to study for a higher degree.

The research group has a wide experience in food science and technology, which it applies with direct industry links. Past and recent grants for research have been obtained from regional and national bodies.

The main areas of expertise are:

  • The development of improved food safety systems
  • The automation of food handling and packaging operations
  • Novel food processing operations
  • New product development and sensory sciences.

Teaching and Assessment

Each student will have two supervisors assigned to them, with expert knowledge in their fields. These supervisors will monitor and support you throughout the duration of your research project, in the form of regular meetings and seminars.

The programme requires the presentation of a thesis and an oral examination.

Entry Requirements

The requirement for entry to the program is a first or second class honours degree or a higher degree.

The MPhil/PhD will prepare you for a career where applied research and development form important elements of the job description. It is especially relevant for careers in food product and process development, in industry as well as in research institutes. In addition, the MPhil acts as an important step towards enrolment on PhD programmes in the UK and abroad.
