MA Creative Writing
MA Lincoln School of Humanities Lincoln A good Honours degree from a recognised universityIntroduction
This MA is designed for students who already have experience of writing creatively. It covers the genres of fiction, short story, poetry and drama although students have the freedom to experiment beyond those borders.
The MA in Creative Writing is a taught postgraduate programme, which is specifically designed to link theory to practice at several levels. Students have the opportunity to practice different genres of creative writing as they compile a portfolio of their own work and will be required to produce a piece of work which will be electronically published. Side by side with creative practice, students study a core strand from the MA in English Studies programme, designed to theoretically inform the creative practice.
Content
Two modules will run concurrently through semesters A and B. The first, ‘Production and Creativity’, will give students the opportunity to compile a portfolio of their own creative writing which will be submitted for assessment at the end of the academic year. Students will be required to work within two genres, ie. poetry and fiction, scriptwriting and poetry, or fiction and scriptwriting. The portfolio will also comprise a reflective log in which students will be asked to write about their experience of the creative process.
Running concurrently with 'Production and Creativity' will be the 'Production and Publication' module. This will require that students produce a short – ie. 14-16 page – piece of writing and publish it electronically on the internet. Students will be taught the technicalities of such a method of publication and also how to self-publicise their work.
Complementing these creative modules, students will study the 'English Now' core strand of the English MA. This uses fiction, life-writing, drama and poetry written in the UK and Ireland since 2000 as a focus for exploring the state of English literature and literary studies in the twenty-first century. 'English Now' is divided into two single semester modules which will run alongside the creative writing units in both semesters. This modules explores the relationship between literature and its context, raises current theoretical issues, explores formal issues and, significantly for creative writing students, considers that which makes literature a unique form of human activity. These modules are supported by a research skills module.
Teaching & Assessment
The final piece of assessment will be a 15000 word piece of creative writing. This will take the form of a dissertation and will provide students with the opportunity to work on an extensive piece of writing open to the choice of the student. Unlike the portfolio, students will be expected here to work within one genre of writing.
Careers
The MA provides career opportunities in the creative industries as well as in earning income from writing in all forms of genre from fiction through to screen and radio production/adaptation. There is also the opportunity to continue by following a doctoral programme in Creative Writing.
