Please note: This course, previously the Certificate in Land-based Studies, is now called the Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies.
The Diploma in Land-based Studies is a practical, work related course. You will learn new skills by completing practical tasks and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. The course provides a good foundation for careers in land-based industries, or progression to a more advanced qualification.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade E or above, including English and Maths. You must also demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy. Candidates will also be expected to be computer literate. All applicants must be at least 16 years of age on entry. Other equivalent qualifications may be considered.
What Will You Study?

Health and well-being of animals

Assist with the handling and restraint of animals: You will learn how to assist a supervisor when handling, moving and restraining an animal.

Assist with the exercise of animals: You will learn how to assist a supervisor when exercising animals such as dogs, cats, rodents and farm animals.

Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation: You will select, prepare and maintain accommodation for a range of animals including horses, cattle, sheep, rabbits, mice and exotic animals.

Assist with feeding and watering of animals: You will learn to feed and water a range of animals and to clean and maintain the equipment to do this. The animals will include horses, cattle, sheep, rabbits, mice and exotic animals, amongst others.

Safe and Effective Working Practices: This is a core unit across all options within the Level 1 Diploma, and provides the student with the necessary knowledge and understanding for safe and effective work practices in land-based industries. This unit covers correct procedures, recommended codes of practice and current legislations. Reporting procedures and the correct use of PPE, other equipment and safety within the work place.

How Will You Be Assessed?
How will you be assessed?
The programme is delivered through a range of classroom and practical sessions, combined with periods of self directed study and skills development. Your progress will be monitored continuously throughout the programme, and you will be assessed via the following means:
- Externally set multiple-choice tests, which cover the two core units. These are administered online and can be taken when required
- Written assignments
- Practical assessments and observation.
A Portfolio of evidence is required to demonstrate your achievements, which will be graded Pass, Credit or Distinction.
What Can You Do After The Course?
The Diploma in Land-based Studies is an end in itself, providing you with opportunities to seek employment. It will also develop the skills you need to gain entry onto a Level 2 Diploma.
