Advanced Apprenticeship Horse Care Level 3 (Work-based)

Advanced Apprenticeship 12-18 Months Agriculture, Equine and Riseholme College Riseholme - Lincoln All applicants must be between 16 and 25* years of age on entry and need to be employed in the industry. 4 GCSE's at grade C or above to include English Language, Maths and Science or an equivalent qualification.

A part-time, work-based apprenticeship, reflecting your chosen career path and the particular branch of industry in which you work.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English Language, Maths and Science or an equivalent qualification.  You must also demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy.  All applicants must be between 16 and 25* years of age on entry and need to be employed in the industry.  Applicants are expected to demonstrate that they are:

  • Committed to a career in the industry
  • Willing to take responsibility for their own learning and development
  • Committed to attend off the job training
  • Able to acquire the broad range of skills, knowledge and understanding required in the apprenticeship.

*Candidates over 25 can access the components of the course but will have to make a contribution to fees

What Will You Study?

During your training, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a broad range of areas relevant to the particular branch of industry in which you work.

Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship units include:

  • Routine Care of Horses

  • Maintaining Health and Well Being

  • Preparing for Work

  • Transporting Horses

  • Managing and Improving Staff Routines

  • Health & Safety.

 One optional unit must be selected from the following:

  • Schooling Horses

  • Exercising Horses

  • Driving

  • Trekking

  • Polo

  • Breaking

  • Breeding

  • Coaching

  • Competition Grooming.

How Will You Be Assessed?

Training is work-based, with ongoing practical assessments in your workplace, and you will spend one day a week at College in classroom based lectures and tutorials, which are used along with directed study to underpin the knowledge and skills learned during practical sessions. You will keep a portfolio of evidence of your practical ability, which will be regularly reviewed.

Your progress through the programme is monitored continuously to ensure that you maximise your potential by building on existing skills and developing new ones. This will lead to you demonstrating your competence within the work place.

What Can You Do After The Course?

Those students completing the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship could find full-time employment as senior grooms on yards offering a range of equestrian facilities, such as, livery yards, studs, hunting yards, riding schools and those offering other equestrian recreational facilities.

 

There will also be the opportunity to progress to a Higher Education programme.
