Extended Diploma 2 Years Agriculture, Equine and Riseholme College Riseholme - Lincoln 4 GCSE's at grade C or above to include English Language, Maths and Science or a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care with a full Merit profile.Introduction
The animal care industry is rapidly expanding, thanks to an increased public awareness of animal welfare issues, and as a result needs qualified and well-trained staff. The Diploma in Animal Management combines basic scientific knowledge, with the theory and practice of animal and business management. It is ideal for people who wish to apply for a supervisory or managerial position within the animal care industry. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to care for and handle a wide range of animals at the College’s own purpose built unit.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English Language, Maths and Science or a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care with a full Merit profile. You must also demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy. Candidates will also be expected to be computer literate. All applicants must be at least 16 years of age on entry. Other equivalent qualifications may be considered. You should also demonstrate suitable animal experience or background (applicants without experience may be asked to undertake a practical assessment).
What Will You Study?
You will undertake work experience during the course, which will help you to better understand the animal care industry, and utilise your skills and knowledge. You will be encouraged to find your own placement, but we will support you in this where required. Routine duties at the College’s animal unit can form part of these hours.
Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to care for and handle a wide range of animals including lizards, snakes, dogs, cats, rabbits, fish, chinchillas, ferrets, goats, mice, rats, guinea pigs and marmoset monkeys. The College houses all of these animals in its purpose built Rural Science Centre, where you will have regular timetabled practical work, to allow you to develop your animal husbandry skills, which will include feeding, watering, cleaning out and exercising the animals.
You will study various units over 2 years to achieve 180 credits including a combination of the following topic areas:

How Will You Be Assessed?
Classroom based lectures are used along with directed study to underpin the knowledge and skills learned during practical sessions. Your progress will be monitored continuously throughout the programme, and you will be assessed via the following means:
- Written assignments
- Practical assessments
- Case studies
Tutorial sessions are used to feedback on your progress.
What Can You Do After The Course?
The Diploma in Animal Management is an end in itself, providing you with opportunities to seek a supervisory or management position in industry. Successful students have found positions with the Guide Dogs for the Blind, RSPCA, the Police Force, veterinary nursing, kennel management, pet shops and grooming parlours. Others have used their qualification as an entry onto higher qualifications.
