Apprenticeship Animal Care Level 2 (Work-based)
Apprenticeship 12-18 Months Agriculture, Equine and Riseholme College Riseholme - Lincoln 4 GCSE's at grade C or above to include English Language, Maths and Science or an equivalent qualification. All applicants must be between 16 and 25* years of age on entry and need to be employed in the industry.Introduction
A part-time, work-based apprenticeship, reflecting your chosen career path and the particular branch of industry in which you work.
Entry Requirements
Potential apprentices are expected to demonstrate that they are:
- committed to a career in the industry
- willing to take responsibility for their own learning and development
- committed to attend off the job training
- Able to acquire the broad range of skills, knowledge and understanding required in the apprenticeship.
*Candidates over 25 can access the components of the course but will have to make a contribution to fees.
What Will You Study?
During your training, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a broad range of areas relevant to the particular branch of industry in which you work.
Level 2 Apprenticeship units include:
- Maintain & Develop Personal Performance
- Establish & Maintain Working Relationships with others
- Promote & Maintain Health & Wellbeing of Animals
- Deliver Basic Treatments to Animals
- Select, Prepare & Maintain Accommodation
- Control and Restrain Animals
- Moving Animals Between Locations
- Reducing Risks To Health & Safety
- Prepare and Provide Feed/Water to Animals
- Prepare & Groom Dogs Prior to Bathing
- Bath & Clean Dogs
- Bio Security & Cleanliness of Working Environment
- Provide Controlled Exercise Opportunity for Animals.
How Will You Be Assessed?
Training is work-based, with ongoing practical assessments in your workplace, and you will spend one day a week at College in classroom based lectures and tutorials, which are used along with directed study to underpin the knowledge and skills learned during practical sessions. You will keep a portfolio of evidence of your practical ability, which will be regularly reviewed.
Your progress through the programme is monitored continuously to ensure that you maximise your potential by building on existing skills and developing new ones. This will lead to you demonstrating your competence within the work place.

- Apprenticeship Certificate
- City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Work-based Animal Care
- Functional Skills
- Additional Occupational Qualifications.
What Can You Do After The Course?
Successful apprentices could find full-time employment in the animal care industry as assistants and operatives in areas such as kennels, grooming parlours and animal welfare organisations.
Those students completing the Level 2 Apprenticeship may have the opportunity to progress to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship or a full-time course.
