The Diploma in Animal Care is a practical, work related course, which will provide you with a sound foundation for your future career in small animal or horse care skills training. It will also give you a progression route onto higher level courses.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D or above to include English, Maths and Science. You must also demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy. Candidates will also be expected to be computer literate. All applicants must be at least 16 years of age on entry. Other equivalent qualifications may be considered. You should also demonstrate suitable animal experience or background (applicants without experience may be asked to undertake a practical assessment).

What Will You Study?

You will undertake work experience during the course. You will be encouraged to find your own placement, but we will support you in this where required. Routine duties at the College’s animal unit can form part of these hours.

Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to care for and handle a wide range of animals, including lizards, snakes, dogs, cats, rabbits, fish, chinchillas, ferrets, goats, mice, rats, guinea pigs and marmoset monkeys. The College houses all of these animals in its purpose built Rural Science Centre, where you will have regular timetabled practical work, to allow you to develop your animal husbandry skills, which will include feeding, watering, cleaning out and exercising the animals.

You will study various units to achieve 60 credits including a combination of the following topic areas:

  • Biology
  • Health and Welfare
  • Behaviour and Handling
  • Animal Accommodation
  • Work Experience
  • Feeding
  • Grooming
  • Exotics
  • Nursing
  • Horse Care
  • Functional Skills.

How Will You Be Assessed?

Classroom-based lectures are used along with directed study to underpin the knowledge and skills learned during practical sessions. Your progress will be monitored continuously throughout the programme, and you will be assessed via the following means:

  • Written assignments
  • Practical assessments and observation
  • Verbal assessments.
